Creating New Traditions

By the time you read this post I will be a married lady! Whoo Hoo!!! Which brings me to the topic of the day. Since I regularly write about etiquette and traditions, I am wanting some advice on these very topics. As newlyweds (and long time marrieds), how did you establish your holiday traditions and fitting in both your family and your husbands family? Do you swap? His mom's for Thanksgiving, yours for Christmas? Or if you live in the same town do try and fit both in on one day?

I'd love to hear about your experiences!!

Our families live about 15 hours' drive away from each other, which makes dividing up the holidays easier, in my opinion. We rotate every year and do Thanksgiving at his parents, Christmas at mine, and then switch the next time around. My sisters have it a lot harder - all of their family and in-laws are within an hour's drive of each other, so they have to shuttle back and forth for dinner and dessert. I'm glad that we don't have to deal with that!

We live far from both families. My fmaily is about 12 hours away or an airplan flight and his is 4 hours away in the summer(in the winter it means crossing 2 mountain passes in snow making it a sometimes 8 hour trip). Last year my brother got married right before Christmas and this year they are having a baby so we are going to CA. Mostly we decided to have our own traditions and not necessarily go to one or the other. Also my hubby is not on good terms with his family so he doesn't want to go there. I am sure once we have kids it will be harder.

My in laws and mom all live pretty close by. So we get together at Thanksgiving with both families. Christmas is a little different. Since my parents don't get a long it's out of the question to do one big family gathering My Dad travels down for the Holiday and we will spend Christmas Day with him and my in laws. I try to make time for my mom and step dad around Christmas, sometimes it is after my dad leaves.

We live in Cleveland but both of our families are from Indianapolis...so we are able to squeeze in both families for both holidays. We want to move to the South at some point...and have our babies (!) so when this happens it could get a little tricky if we want to start staying home and letting our children develop their own traditions.

My husband and I live in CA and both our families in GA. Last year was our first year as newlyweds. We decided to go to our parents. This year is a different story; we are staying in CA. My parents have always told us to make our own traditions with each other because we are now a family. Needless to say his parents weren't thrilled when we told them about our plans, but they adjusted to the idea. Once we have kids we will probably alternate each year between CA and GA.

Both of our family's live several hundred miles away. So, we go to my husband's family for Thanksgiving because the weather at Christmastime may be undrivable. We go to my parents at Christmas.
