Gym Etiquette 2

Here are some more things to consider when you go into your local gym or fitness center:

--Cardio machines can often be one of the most congested areas in the gym.  If you are using a cardio machine, be mindful of those waiting in line and limit your cardio workout to 20-30 minutes.  Some gyms have signs posted with cardio workout limits, check to see if yours is one of them.

--By all means say a polite hello to a fellow gym go-er, but do not proceed to be a chatty mc-chat-ster as it may interfere with their routine.

--Be aware of the smell situation: lay off the perfume and cologne before the gym as those scents intensify as you sweat.

#1 New Years Resolution

Everyone knows the #1 New Year's Resolution is to hit the gym!  If you elect to go to a gym in lieu of running or working out at home, then you have to be aware of your new found gym friends and make sure you are respecting them and their space.

According to my good friend ( I wish!) Emily Post, wiping down the machines after you use them is your number one etiquette concern at the gym.  No one wants to workout in someone else's sweat!  Can you say gross??

Don't leave loose weights or dumbbells on machines or bars.  If you are using a machine put the weight back at the lowest setting after you are done.   Doing these simple things will help the next person, not have to spend all their time reseting the area.

Check back this afternoon for some ADORABLE stationery and tomorrow morning for more gym tips!

Locker Room Etiquette

When it comes to the locker room it can be easy to forget your other gym go-ers and revert to the get-ready routine you practice every morning. Here are some things to remember for the consideration of others.

-Take a quick shower. Especially if people are waiting. And be sure to remove all your toiletries when you are done.

-Limit yourself to one or two towels and place them in the laundry, not on the floor when you're done.

- Don't take up the mirror or hog the blow dryer

-Same goes for the lockers and benches. Only use one locker and try not to take up the bench with your things.

Workout Gear: What not to wear edition

OK, I've already mentioned earlier in the week, how impolite it is to stare at the gym. However, there are those people who come in the gym in such a state that you can't help yourself. For them, let's go over some visuals for what does and does not constitute appropriate workout attire.

This is what NOT to wear (unless your the time traveler's wife and it's 1986):

Here are some fabulous pieces to turn to before breaking a sweat:

Exercise Class Etiquette

Not everyone feels comfortable winging it at the gym. For some, exercise classes are a better way to stay in shape. If you are attending classes there are certain points of etiquette to consider.

--Never enter class late. This disrupts the class for everyone else.

--If you bring water, make sure its in a spill-proof container

--Don't ever bring food

--Put away your gym bag. People can trip on your bag or its straps, let's just leave it in the locker room.

--Stay quiet. No cell phones and no chit chat.

Gym Etiquette

I spend many mornings at my local gym and let me tell you it can be a scene. It's so entertaining to watch all the people go about their routines in the morning. But there are certain things that should and should not happen at the gym (don't even get me started on things that should and should not be worn to the gym...but that's for later in the week ). Below are some classic dos and don'ts:

-Always wipe off your mats and machines. No one wants to come up after you and wipe up your sweat. Gross.

-Please do not stare at other patrons. Most people like to go unnoticed at the gym

-As cardio machines are very popular, please limit your usage to 20 or 30 minutes if you notice people are waiting.

-Reset machines to a lower weight setting when your done

-Think about how you smell. Use deodorant and be careful using perfumes or colognes because these smells will intensify as you work out

Gym Etiquette

While it's perfectly acceptable to sweat, grunt and make mean faces while working out, there are a few behaviors that aren't acceptable. Here are just a few rules for getting along with your fellow exercisers:

Share. If you're doing multiple sets on a machine, it's common courtesy to let others work in during your rest periods. This may not always be practical, but offer to share whenever you can.

Clean up After Yourself. My biggest pet peeve is someone who walks away from a machine, leaving a slimy pool of sweat behind. Thanks! Always bring a towel with you and wipe the machines down when you're finished. Most gyms offer wipes or sprays strategically located around the gym for this purpose.

Leave no trace. My next biggest pet peeve is the person who leaves six million pounds on the leg press machine. I don't know, maybe I look stronger than I am. The point is, always put your weights back when you're finished.

Don't hog the treadmill. Many gyms have time limits on cardio machines during busy hours. There's a reason for that, and you should obey it. And no, throwing your towel over the display doesn't fool me.

Keep it down. Most gym-goers I know have seen That Guy. The one pumping away on the treadmill while screaming into a cell phone. Unless it's an emergency, save your chat-time for after your workouts.

Cover it up. I respect the confidence that allows some people to walk around the locker room naked. Know what else I respect? Seeing you wearing a towel after your shower to keep the locker room a comfortable place for everyone.
